What Is Duct Cleaning?
According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, pollutants such as dust, animal dander, hair, bacteria, tobacco smoke, and pollen are drawn into ducts along with air and circulate an average of five to seven times throughout the day. These pollutants can build up in ducts, lower indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency, and increase your fuel bills. Air duct cleaning involves inspecting and cleaning major components of a forced-air heating and cooling system.
- Air filters
- Air handler
- Fans and housing
- Registers and grilles
- Supply and return air ducts
- Heat exchanger and cooling coils
- Condensate system, including drip pan
During a cleaning session, we put the system under negative pressure to keep contaminants from spreading. We break contaminants loose from surfaces within the system using brushes, compressed air, and other tools. Next, we collect the contaminants to ensure fine particulates do not escape and enter the living space.
The amount of time it takes depends on variables such as the size of your home, the complexity of the duct system, and the extent of contamination.
Signs You Need Duct Cleaning
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends cleaning ducts on an as-needed basis and lists several factors that indicate when duct cleaning is warranted, such as:
- Household pets
- Smokers in the household
- Presence of pests or vermin in the ducts
- Dust and particulates being released into the living space
- Organic growth in the ducts or on other components of the HVAC system
The presence of organic growth, moisture, or pests suggests an underlying problem, such as leaks in the system. Although duct cleaning can remove impurities, we also investigate the source of the problem to avoid recurring contamination.
